What is an eSIM and how does it work?

An eSIM (embedded SIM) is a small chip built directly into your phone, rather than a plastic card you insert. Instead of picking up a SIM card at a kiosk, you download a digital profile onto that chip and activate it — the whole process happens over Wi-Fi or existing data, usually in a few minutes.

Functionally, an eSIM does the same job as a physical SIM: it identifies your device to a mobile network and lets you connect to that network's data (and, depending on the plan, calls and texts). The difference is entirely in how you get and manage it. Most phones released since around 2018 support eSIM, though exact compatibility varies by model, region, and whether your device is carrier-locked.

How you actually install one

When you buy a travel eSIM, you're given either a QR code or a set of manual installation details (an SM-DP+ address and activation code). On your phone, you go into your cellular or mobile network settings, choose to add a new plan, and either scan the QR code or enter the details manually. The profile downloads, and a new line appears in your settings — separate from your existing SIM, if you have one.

The eSIM doesn't need to be active immediately. Many travellers install it before their trip, while they still have reliable home Wi-Fi, and then simply turn the line on once they land at their destination.
